'I'd like to keep him': Russell Westbrook's return set up reunions throughout the 'Peake

In case Russell Westbrook couldn’t get to her, Betty Elder had a backup plan.

Elder, 93, has worked the same door in the tunnels of Chesapeake Energy Arena since before the Thunder landed in Oklahoma City. For 11 years, she was on Westbrook’s route from the locker room to the court. That changed Thursday night, Westbrook’s first game in OKC as an opponent.

“If something don’t give,” Elder said an hour and a half before game time, “I’ll get one of the policemen to take me to him. Because that’s the way you have to sometimes do it.”

Westbrook’s first game at the ‘Peake since the Thunder traded him to Houston was littered with public reunions. The team welcomed Westbrook back with a tribute video. Westbrook bumped fists along the scorer’s table before stepping on the court and interacted with fans throughout the game. He hugged his former teammates and Thunder chairman Clay Bennett after the final buzzer of a 113-92 OKC victory.

But out of sight of the cameras and an arena brimming with spectators, Westbrook went through a series of more private reunions with arena security and staff members.

“Those were the most important ones,” Westbrook said after the game. “Those are the people that show up every night, support, don’t have an attitude, are always smiling and are always asking how my family is, how my kids are doing, how I am doing. That means more than anything because those people, whether it is security, the people working in the back that you don’t see because they don’t even come out to the court, for me those relationships I cherish more than anything because those people matter. And everybody in this arena matters because they were part of the family, and when I was here I felt like everybody was a family.”

Elder quite literally refers to Westbrook as family. That made this summer’s trade that much harder for her to digest.

“It’s just like they took one of my kids,” she said, “because he’s like my kid.”

For years, she and Westbrook have gone through the same pregame routine. As Westbrook left the locker room, he’d catch Elder’s eye at the end of the hallway. He’d wave, and she’d wave back.

“Then he comes this way,” she recalled, standing outside the open double doors at the bend in the tunnel, “and we threw each other kisses. We did it every game. We never missed a game.”

Elder doesn’t remember exactly how the tradition started. It just happened organically. Then it never left Westbrook’s meticulously structured pregame.

“He’s done a lot for me,” Elder said. “Because I lost my youngest son, and I lost my husband, so I’ve been by myself for a while. And he was always there to ask me if I needed anything or if I was alright. And you don’t forget those things. To me, he’s special, he always will be, and I don’t care what anybody says.”

Elder is still getting used to Westbrook’s absence in Oklahoma City. Others have suggested she develop a similar routine with another player, but that hasn’t happened quite yet.

From her post, Elder can see the empty doorway she says Westbrook used to stop in to stretch.

“I look at that door every day,” she said, pointing, “and there’s just something not there.”

She didn’t know it at the time, with about an hour left before tipoff, but she wouldn’t have to wait much longer for that absence to be filled. Westbrook soon would round the corner to greet her. It wouldn’t be quite the same – he wouldn’t be coming out of the home team’s locker room, and he’d be clad in Rockets colors – but it would be sweet all the same.

“I’m tickled to death to have him back,” Elder said. “I’d like to keep him.”
