Classy. That’s how I describe Thursday night at the ‘Peake. Classy.

Classy tribute by the Thunder to Russell Westbrook. Classy fan reaction to Westbrook, showing love for their all-time hero while exhorting the Thunder to victory. Classy response by Westbrook, everything from pregame on the court to postgame on the court to media dealings. Heck, even the Rockets were classy, despite a 113-92 defeat. The Rockets seemed to believe that hey, this was a night that Westbrook deserved, and if getting avalanched for one night was part of the deal, so be it.

The entire night was a stark contrast to Feb. 11, 2017, when Kevin Durant returned to Chesapeake Arena for the first time after leaving the Thunder to sign with the already-potent Golden State Warriors.

The rancor in the arena that night was palpable. From all concerned.

The Thunder was cold in spirit; the guy who a year earlier was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame was not so much as acknowledged as returning after eight fabulous seasons.

The fans were mean-spirited. The boos were loud and constant. The man they cheered vociferously just a few months earlier was Public Enemy No. 1. Some fans dressed in costume – the little girl in the cupcake uniform was cute but didn’t alleviate the toxic atmosphere.

The Thunder players weren’t happy to see Durant but also weren’t happy to try to play through such an atmosphere. The Warriors were supportive of Durant and whipped the Thunder thoroughly, but still had to feel yacky about the entire experience.

No one left the arena that night feeling good.

Thursday night, no one left the arena feeling poorly. Even James Harden, who had a miserable game, seemed to be happy for Westbrook having such a welcome.

Westbrook clearly was moved emotionally. He exchanged hugs all over the court postgame, then held a press conference unlike any he’s ever conducted in Oklahoma City, with introspective, interesting answers. Even to mine.

I knew he wouldn’t trot out the “next question” routine. Westbrook put that nonsense behind us after Game 5 of the Portland series. But I had no idea that he would replace his normally stoic personality with some humanity. No idea that he would replace his non-answer answers with answers that made for great insight and quotes that enhanced stories.

So it was a fun and great night at the ‘Peake. Classy in every way.
