Thunder: Kevin Durant, Kendrick Perkins trade Twitter jabs during Russell Westbrook return

Russell Westbrook was in the middle of his homecoming game in Oklahoma City on Thursday night when a Twitter beef broke out between former teammates Kevin Durant and Kendrick Perkins.

Perkins, who played for the Thunder from 2010-15, started the storm Thursday morning

"In about 30 minutes I'm going to give my opinion on @SportsCenter on why (I) believe that Russell Westbrook is the best player to have ever put on an Oklahoma City Thunder jersey," Perkins tweeted. "He is MR. THUNDER!!!"

The hook had been set, and Durant eventually took the bait.

Perkins called out Durant for the Thunder's second-round loss to the Grizzlies in the 2013 playoffs. The Thunder was playing without Westbrook, who injured his knee in the first round against the Rockets in the infamous Patrick Beverley collision.

"Yea and our starting center @KendrickPerkins averaged a whopping two (points) and three (rebounds) during that series," Durant responded. "U played hard tho champ lol."

The fight was on.

"Boy, stop. You did the weakest move in NBA history," Perkins responded. "Up on a team 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals and then go join them the following season? Heart of champion right there."

Added Durant: "Weak is starting at center, playing real minutes with no production. Should've worked on your skills as much as I did."

Perkins, an ESPN analyst, doubled down on his Durant criticism when appearing on ESPN's The Jump on Friday.

"Well first of all I want to apologize to Russell Westbrook, because that activity on Twitter took away from his moment," Perkins said. "It was about Russ. That's what I wanted to make it about, Mr. Thunder himself."

Perkins then clarified that he doesn't think Westbrook is a better overall player than Durant.

"He could've picked up the phone and called me if he had a problem with what I said about Russ," Perkins said. "But he wanted to make that about him, in my opinion. My phone always on. KD's number not blocked."

Perkins questioned why Durant "is so sensitive," saying that Durant "knew this day was coming."

"KD almost left that franchise for dead," Perkins said. "Russell Westbrook kept that franchise relevant."
