Sooners' DC Alex Grinch potentially a candidate for Washington State head coaching job

NORMAN — Could Alex Grinch's stint at OU last just one season?

Shortly after the news broke that former Sooners offensive coordinator Mike Leach was leaving Washington State for Mississippi State, Grinch's name percolated as a potential candidate to replace Leach in Pullman.

Grinch was Leach's defensive coordinator with the Cougars from 2015-17, engineering a dramatic turnaround for a defense that had been among the nation's worst.

After spending 2018 as the co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State, Grinch was hired as Oklahoma's defensive coordinator.

The Sooners' defense was markedly better this season, climbing to No. 38 in total defense after finishing No. 114 in 2018. OU was No. 59 in passing yards allowed after finishing No. 129 (of 129) a year earlier.

"There's no doubt in my mind if that's what he ultimately wants to do, that he would be a very good head coach," Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said of Grinch this season.
