OSU basketball: Cowboys' offense struggles in loss to No. 17 West Virginia

STILLWATER — Lindy Waters III waited for the pass as he measured the basket. This was going to be Oklahoma State’s spark.

He fired a 3-pointer that rolled around the rim and through the net. Finally, after starting 0 for 16 from behind the arc, the Cowboys had life down nine points with 8:16 remaining.

“We can make another one,” senior Cam McGriff thought.

But hope was short-lived. The Cowboys did not make another 3-pointer.

A physically overpowering West Virginia team had every answer. Free throws. Dunks. Key rebounds.

Each play silenced the OSU fans. A comeback attempt was put to rest.

No. 17-ranked West Virginia beat OSU 55-41 late Monday night, sending the reeling Cowboys searching for offensive answers following a second straight Big 12 loss in less than 72 hours.

“At some point, we’re going to shoot better,” OSU coach Mike Boynton said. “You just can’t score 40 and 50 and win consistently in the Big 12. It’s not realistic.

“We have to find a way to get more rhythm offensively and make more shots, and that will happen if we continue to fight defensively the way we did tonight.”

In two Big 12 games, the Cowboys’ offense has fallen apart.

OSU (9-5, 0-2) has shot 29 percent overall in the two games. On Monday, it shot 29.2 percent, but 5 percent from 3-point range. The Cowboys made just 1 of 20 3-pointers.

Sharpshooter Thomas Dziagwa missed the game with the flu. He’s the Cowboys’ best 3-point shooter. But his absence can’t explain every offensive woe.

“We have to find a better flow,” McGriff said. “There is not nothing the defense is not letting us do if we want to. It’s just a matter of us trying to be less stagnant and trying to get more easy buckets.”

West Virginia (12-2, 1-1) used its size and power to its advantage.

Six-foot-10, 255-pound forward Derek Culver had 12 rebounds and eight points. Six-foot-9, 258-pound freshman Oscar Tshiebwe had 12 points and eight rebounds.

They were menaces inside, aiding a physical game that had 38 total fouls and 39 turnovers.

“I don’t think we’re all that physical,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said.

Added Boynton after a sigh of disbelief: “It’s his team. He gets to decide that. You just look out there and they’re monsters, man. And, our kids fought. They battled.”

It was a far different game for the Cowboys than Saturday’s 35-point loss at Texas Tech. The Cowboys did compete.

The defense held West Virginia to 38.8 percent shooting. It’s the first time in 13 games under Boynton that OSU lost when an opponent scored less than 60 points.

But the offensive struggles are a trend Boynton did not see coming.

After an off day Tuesday, the Cowboys will go back to the drawing board on offense ahead of Saturday’s game at TCU.

“I really thought that shooting would be a strength for this team coming into the year with the personnel we had and just the history of the guys,” Boynton said. “It just hasn’t played out that way for whatever reason, and it’s our job to figure out a way to get a better rhythm.”
