OSU basketball: Former All-American Gale McArthur dies

STILLWATER — Former All-American guard and Oklahoma A&M legend Gale McArthur died this week, the university announced. He was 90.

Memorial arrangements are pending.

McArthur was a key member of the Oklahoma A&M’s Final Four teams in 1949 and 1951.

In the 1950-51 season, he averaged 11.6 points and led the way to 29 victories and a national consolation finals appearance. He was also named a first-team All-American by the Helms Foundation, Sporting News and Look Magazine. He was a second-team selection by the Associated Press, United Press International, Converse Yearbook and Colliers/NABC.

Following that season, he was drafted with the 40th pick of the NBA Draft by the Minneapolis Lakers, but he opted to serve in the Air Force.

A Mangum native, he later returned to Stillwater to coach the freshman team for Henry Iba. McArthur coached Eddie Sutton that season.

McArthur then became a dentist, spending the next 45 years as an orthodontist in Ponca City and Stillwater.
