Holiday Classic notebook: Midwest City boys, Piedmont girls claim titles

Kevin Overton showed why he was named Most Valuable Player when it mattered most.

The star on Class 6A fourth-ranked Midwest City's boys basketball teams scored 20 points, Christian Cook added 14, and the Bombers knocked off district rival Class 5A No. 3 Carl Albert to win the championship of the second-annual Cornerstone Bank Mustang Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Jaden Harrell's 15 points paced five Carl Albert players who scored in double figures.

Midwest City (6-0) jumped out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter, but Carl Albert outscored the Bombers over the next two periods to make it a three-point game heading to the final frame. Although Midwest City didn't make a field goal in the final 3:54, it was able to hold on for its second consecutive Holiday Classic title.

Piedmont tops host Mustang for crown

Mustang had no answer for Piedmont star Delanie Crawford.

The junior on the Class 5A No. 1 Wildcats' girls basketball team scored 20 points, leading them to a 51-34 victory against the Class 6A No. 16 Broncos on Saturday in the finals of the Cornerstone Bank Mustang Holiday Classic. Tyeshia Anderson added 11 points.

With the game tied entering the fourth quarter, Piedmont's offense caught fire while its defense allowed no space. Mustang didn't make a field goal in the final 5:11, and Piedmont outscored the Broncos 23-6 in the period.

Putnam City boys take third

Kendural Jolly scored 20 points, Zycque Stevenson added 11 and the Class 6A No. 13 Putnam City boys basketball squad topped Owasso 49-47 in the third-place game on Saturday.

The back-and-forth contest featured eight ties and 10 lead changes. Owasso used a big third quarter to head to the fourth trailing by one, but Putnam City held off any rally chance from the Rams.
