OSU basketball: Walk-on Dee Mitchell makes first career start
Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton mixed up the starting lineup Sunday afternoon at Houston.
Walk-on sophomore point guard Dee Mitchell started in the absence of star Isaac Likekele, who missed a third straight game due to an illness.
It’s Mitchell’s first career start. Freshman Chris Harris Jr., who is not a natural point guard, started the past two games for Likekele. Avery Anderson III remains a key player off the bench.
But Boynton likes the steadiness Mitchell has shown since he joined the team Jan. 17. He also likes having a true point guard in the starting lineup that allows the normal rotations to return, even without Likekele.
“He brings great toughness,” Boynton said after Mitchell played 10 minutes and scored three points in last Sunday’s loss to Wichita State. “He takes care of the ball pretty good. Right now, that’s not a strong suit for us. I’ve got confidence that he’s going to get us in position and get us organized on offense.”
