Class A football: Ringling uses clock management, stellar defense to top Cashion and win fifth state title

EDMOND – Coty Scott was patient as he positioned his body with the football floating toward him.

Ringling's 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end didn't need to do anything fancy. Quarterback Sam Van Buskirk lofted a pass on third-and-14, and Scott waited for it to come down, positioning his body where the defender didn't have a chance to swat it away.

He snagged the touchdown, his second of the game, to give Ringling the winning score.

"Honestly, I just told Sam to throw it in front of me and I would go get it," Scott said. "And he sure did it."

The second-ranked Blue Devils topped No. 1 Cashion 20-14 on Saturday at Wantland Stadium for the Class A state title. It is Ringling's fifth state championship in school history. Although the Blue Devils threw only seven passes, they completed six of them while rushing 59 times, controlling the clock for 32:14.

Cashion (13-1) scored on a late touchdown on a 16-yard pass from backup quarterback Brexten Green to Alex Nabavi, but Ringling's Ethan Johnson recovered the onside kick to seal the victory.

"I just wanted to get on the ball," Johnson said of recovering the onside kick. "What went through my mind was reaction, honestly."

Van Buskirk finished with three touchdown passes while Scott had three receptions for 87 yards and two scores. Ringling (13-1) also forced the only turnover of the game, with Julius Koons coming up with an interception against Cashion's Ben Harman.

Scott's second touchdown capped a 16-play, 87-yard drive that lasted 9:41. The drive started with three minutes left in the third quarter but ended with five minutes remaining in the game. The Blue Devils possessed the ball more on that drive than Cashion did the entire first or second half.

"It was just an amazing game," Van Buskirk said. "The crowd, we had great support. Running backs really ran hard, line was great. Can't say enough about those guys."

After a scoreless first quarter, Scott caught his first touchdown on a 41-yard pass from Van Buskirk on the second period's first play. Cashion scored two possessions later on Green's 44 yard reverse up the right sideline. Then Ringling took a 13-7 advantage into the half when Van Buskirk hit Brayden Johnson for a 6-yard touchdown.

Van Buskirk finished 6 of 7 for 115 yards with the three touchdowns. Senior Ethan Johnson led the Blue Devils with 85 rushing yards on 20 carries. He also was tops with 10 tackles and a pass break up.

Twice in the first half, Cashion got inside Ringling's 25-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Cashion was inside the 5 for the final three plays of the first half, and Ringling stopped the Wildcats on three consecutive runs to preserve its lead.

Cashion's best field position came when it started on the Blue Devils' 31 after a poor punt. Consecutive false start penalties put the Wildcats behind the chains, and on second down, Koons came away with the interception.

The Blue Devils dropped their first game against Mangum before finishing the season on a 13-game win streak. Coach Philip Koons credited his team's 10 seniors, saying they built the foundation for a successful finish.

"(The Mangum game) was one of those great losses," Koons said. "I'm just proud of these guys. They fought so hard and had such great character and grit."

The loss was Cashion's third in the state championship game in the past six seasons. Cashion returned 21 of 22 starters off its 2018 team, which was upset in the second round of the playoffs.

The only non-returning starter was Harman, a sophomore quarterback. He finished 5 of 16 for 74 yards with the interception.

On the ground, Cashion averaged 5.1 yards on 29 carries, finishing with 149 yards, but turning the ball over on downs for three of its eight possessions proved costly.

Ringling's state title is its first since 2012. For Philip Koons, who is in his second year leading the Blue Devils, it was his third state championship as a coach, as he won two as Tuttle's coach in 2001 and 2005. He said he was happy to be back on top.

"(Ringling) is a great place for football," Philip Koons said. "It's not going to last forever. Sometimes you're going to get good classes and bad classes, but we've had two really good classes. We made the most of it, and we stayed healthy most of the year.

"God has blessed us. God blessed my by putting me in Ringling after the crap I've been through in my career. Praying the St. Joseph's prayer every day, and it paid off."
