Oklahoma City developer P.B. Odom III's trees are gifts that keep on living the whole year round
Only God can make a tree, and Old St. Nick can inspire a Christmas tree, but P.B. Odom III gets credit this time of year for decked-out trees lighting up neighborhoods he's developed in south Oklahoma City.
Trees at entrances and in medians and common areas in Odom's flagship addition, Rivendell, as well as Talavera, Rockport and Chatenay, came from Odom's own tree farm, Rosebrook Nursery, 3800 SW 134.
It seems like Odom has been a tree farmer almost as long as he's been a developer. He started Rivendell, now in its 13th section, in 1989, and the tree farm in 1995. Then came other neighborhoods, including Chatenay east of Pennsylvania Avenue on SW 104, and Rockport at SW 125 and Portland.
But he was a seasoned developer before starting Rivendell 30 years ago. He started the tree farm, long managed by Ronnie Ray, to grow trees for his own developments. Odom was installing forests of trees in his neighborhoods.
Other developers came calling. The first tree sales — wholesale only then and now — came in 1998.
"When I started the tree farm, I used a great percentage for my developments," he said. "Now I use about 5% because we are really good at growing great trees and found out we had buyers for our product."
Rosebrook produces nearly 50 varieties of cedar, pine, and holly, as well as oak, elm, maple, redbud, crape myrtle and others. It operates year-round, with planting, fertilizing, pruning, bagging and shipping.
"Our goal at Rosebrook Nursery is to provide the highest quality tree available on the market today coupled with outstanding service," Odom and Ray say on the Rosebrook Nursery web page. "We go to great effort and expense to ensure that every tree bearing our name has benefited from quality care so that ... our customers, can be confident in the product we deliver."
They are especially festive now. But in developer Odom's neighborhoods, farmer Odom's trees are the kinds of gifts that keep on living the whole year round.
