Arlington travelblog: Big 12 title game is different but fun

The Big 12 Championship Game is a great event. Sometimes I wonder how we went six football seasons without it.

Those 1990s games in San Antonio (south of any Big 12 school) and St. Louis (east of any Big 12 school) seem quite quaint now. Then the odyssey of games in Kansas City, Irving, Houston and San Antonio before the Big 12 finally anchored the game in Arlington. Jerry Jones’ new palace hosted the Texas-Nebraska game in 2009 and the OU-Nebraska game in 2010, both great theater, decided by a combined four points.

So when the Big 12 brought back the game in 2017, Arlington was a no-brainer. Not exactly in the middle of the conference – if you don’t overadjust for West Virginia, the dead center of the Big 12 is somewhere around Skiatook – but still, a perfect spot to hold the league’s premier event.

Just as Kansas City is best for basketball, Arlington is best for football. Within four hours of 60 percent of the Big 12 campuses. Sporting the world’s best stadium, though at the Peach Bowl I’m willing to give Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz a shot at that title. Easy access for the fanbases of the Oklahoma and Texas schools, who figure to fill the two slots most years.

The championship game has changed in tone and tenor from those days of two decades ago. When the Big 12 title game first came to Kansas City, it was a huge event. Hailed throughout the city. Treated very much like the basketball tournament. Pep rallies and mass transportation and a sense of revelry all over KC.

That’s not the case in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It’s not that the cities are ambivalent, it’s just that DFW has a lot going on, it’s spread out over at least three huge counties and it’s not like 300,000 people come to town, ala OU-Texas. These days, the game is a stadium enterprise – not that there’s anything wrong with that.

The game itself is better for fans. OU five times played for a Big 12 title in Kansas City, all at night. KC even on great weather days is cold on December nights. But it’s always perfect at JerryWorld. The Big 12 gets 11 a.m. kickoffs these days, so tailgating is minimal. The game has to stand on its own.

And does. The last two years, OU 39-27 over Texas and OU 30-23 over Baylor in overtime, have produced excellent games and quality football.

In the old days, the Big 12 staged a coaches press conference the day before the game, but that’s no longer the case.

Our crew – Jenni Carlson, Ryan Aber, photographer Bryan Terry and I – went down Friday, since 11 a.m. kickoffs make for an incredibly long day when they start with a three-hour drive. We tried to get to AT&T Stadium before 4 p.m., not just so we could pick up our credentials and miss the hassle on Saturday morning, but so Bryan could get some photographs of the stadium for Saturday editions of The Oklahoman.

I call Jenni “JackO,” short for Jackie O., not because of her sunglasses that are the size of trash-can lids but because she’s the epitome of American grace and style. JackO drove, and the trip was uneventful except for a couple of small traffic backups in southern Oklahoma, which have become standard on any trip past the Red River. We got a snack at Sonic in Pauls Valley, took another break in Valley View just north of Denton and eventually got to the George Bush Turnpike with ease. Once you reach the Bush, you’re golden. The diagonal freeway gets you to Arlington quickly.

We were at JerryWorld by 3:15 p.m. or so, got our credentials and then went into the stadium so Bryan could snap the photos. Turns out, the Sooners were walking through the stadium at the same time – not in uniform, just literally walking around, so that players new to the squad wouldn’t walk in Saturday with their jaws dropping. Bryan walked around and shot some photos, then a security guard asked us to leave. She said the Sooners didn’t want anyone in the building. I guess they thought we were scouting the way they strolled.

No problem. We were finished anyway. We checked in at the Fairfield Inn on Lamar, less than a mile from the stadium, and Ryan and I finished up some writing.

We headed for dinner early, about 5:30, so we could get back and watch the Pac-12 Championship Game. The guys wanted to eat at Pecan Lodge, a famous barbeque joint in Dallas’ Deep Ellum.

Traffic along I-30 wasn’t bad until we reached downtown Dallas. Driving towards Dallas at sunset was a cool experience. I like the Dallas skyline, and it shined as the sun bounced off the skyscrapers.

Deep Ellum is a neighborhood just east of downtown Dallas and just north of Fair Park. It is a district composed of restaurants, art houses and entertainment venues. Deep Ellum originally was the vibrant African-American community in Dallas. Over the years, Deep Ellum slumped, then was revived with gentrification, then slumped again with reports of high crime. But about a decade ago, Deep Ellum began turning around, with multi-family housing and all kinds of food and music attractions, and Main Street was alive with hundreds of people out and about.

The Pecan Lodge started about a decade ago in Dallas’ Farmer’s Market and eventually moved to Deep Ellum. It’s been featured in all the usual places – Food Network, Texas Monthly, etc. – and was very good. Sometimes the line stretches far along the sidewalk. When some of the guys went awhile back, they stood outside 45 minutes before getting inside, where there was another 15-minute wait.

But our wait was minimal. We were soon joined by colleague Abby Bitterman, who already was in Dallas; the Norman Transcript’s Tyler Palmateer; and the Athletic’s Jason Kersey, an Oklahoman alum.

I ordered a three-meat combo – brisket, pork rib, handmade sausage with mac-and-cheese and cole slaw. The mac-and-cheese was excellent, and the brisket was the best meat. Very good. It came in a big square and was exquisitely tender. Pecan Lodge offered both the Texas sweet barbeque sauce and the Carolina vinegar based sauce. I wanted no part of the latter, of course.

All in all, an excellent place. JackO, Bryan and I ordered together, and our bill was $63, with no tip necessary, since it’s counter service. Not bad at all.

After the game, we drove back to Arlington, watching Utah-Oregon on my phone, then we sat in the breakfast lobby together and watched the Ducks take out the Utes. JackO and Ryan also watched the Thunder-Minnesota on their phones and I kept up with the Stillwater-Bixby football game back in Oklahoma.

I refrained from following the Thunder, so I could watch it with full attention back in my room. But I knew something crazy had happened, with JackO’s and Ryan’s reaction. Some time after midnight, in my room, I realized that crazy didn’t begin to describe the Thunder’s crazy victory.

It made for a late night, past 1 a.m., and I was up at 7:15 so I could run Bryan over to the stadium. Photographers like to arrive early. It was an easy trip, and I was back at the Fairfield by 8 a.m., and we headed out by 8:45.

The JerryWorld pressbox is outstanding. Best I’ve ever seen, even if the angle is from the corner. You’re high enough to see, and you’ve always got the massive video board to follow the action.

The Big 12 title game always is fun, because the winning team celebrates on the field for probably 30 minutes, and you get to see a lot of natural emotion and get some quick interviews.

Then came the press conferences, and a bunch of writing, and a podcast, and before you knew it, it was 7:30 p.m. Bryan was staying in Dallas for the weekend, and Ryan was headed to the College Football Playoff announcement on Sunday, so it was just JackO and I for the trip home.

We scooted up to Carrollton, just north of Dallas, and had dinner at Babe’s Chicken House, a staple for many of our trips to the Metroplex, and we watched Ohio State-Wisconsin on my phone and then in the car as we zipped back up I-35.

JackO’s a trooper, willing to drive the entire way, in part because she likes it and in part because she thinks I’m a terrible driver. I’m willing to bear that shame, so long as someone drives me.

She dropped me off in Norman around 11:30 p.m., the end of a long two days but a lot of fun, because the Big 12 Championship Game remains an excellent event, back where it belongs. Alive, and in Arlington.
