Big 12 football teams are underdogs in bowl games

The Big 12 drew an interesting array of games for the 2019 bowl season. And here’s how you know.

The Big 12 team is a decided underdog in five of the six Big 12 bowl games, and the other game (Kansas State-Navy in the Liberty Bowl) does not yet have a point-spread line, since Navy plays Army on Saturday.

That’s what happens when you play some of the major names in the game.

The Big 12 opponents are top-ranked LSU (OU in the Peach), No. 5 Georgia (Baylor in the Sugar), No. 11 Utah (Texas in the Alamo), No. 15 Notre Dame (Iowa State in the Camping World) and Texas A&M (OSU in the Texas Bowl).

That’s four of the top 15 teams playing against Big 12 teams, and with OU and Baylor ranked in the top seven, that’s 40 percent of the College Football Playoff committee’s top 15 involved in Big 12 bowl games.

If the Big 12 can go 3-3 against that lineup, that bodes very well for the conference. Here’s how I rank the Big 12 games, toughest to easiest:

1. Oklahoma vs. LSU, Peach Bowl: The Tigers have been fabulous all season. They are not unbeatable. They won 45-38 at Texas. They beat a very good Florida 42-28 in Baton Rouge. Escaped Auburn 23-20 in Baton Rouge. Won at Alabama 46-41. Routed Georgia 37-10 in Atlanta.

Could the Sooners have done that? No. I doubt OU could have won at Bama or routed the Bulldogs in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But win by seven in Austin? Beat Florida and Auburn in games that were relatively or extremely close? Sure.

So LSU at its best probably is out of the Sooners’ reach. That’s OU’s mission – keep LSU from being its best.

2. Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M, Texas Bowl: This ranking changes if quarterback Spencer Sanders and tailback Chuba Hubbard both play. But Sanders is recovering from thumb surgery, and Hubbard could be headed to the NFL.

The Cowboys usually show well for bowl games. This decade, OSU is 7-2 in bowls, and one of those losses was a tight Cotton Bowl against Missouri. But already playing without superstar receiver Tylan Wallace, OSU will be hard-pressed to be at full throttle if it must resort to the Browns, quarterback Dru and tailback L.D.

3. Texas vs. Utah, Alamo Bowl: You never know what you’ll get out of the Longhorns. The Utes figure to be more mad than sad at being in San Antonio, after a discouraging performance against Oregon in the Pac-12 title game.

Tom Herman’s previous two Texas teams acquitted themselves well in bowls – beating Georgia 28-21 in the Sugar and Missouri 33-16 in the Texas Bowl.

4. Kansas State vs. Navy, Liberty Bowl: Strange schedule. The Liberty Bowl is New Year’s Eve, 31 days after K-State finished the regular season with a victory over Iowa State. But the Liberty is only 17 days after the Midshipmen play Army.

Navy is 3-1 the last 10 years in bowl games against Power 5 Conference opponents. That triple option can be hairy.

5. Iowa State vs. Notre Dame, Camping World Bowl: Orlando was hoping for Notre Dame-Texas. I assume Notre Dame was hoping for Notre Dame-Texas.

The Cyclones are the kind of team you want to avoid. Not a big name but play a big game. The Fighting Irish has a better resume’, but that’s mostly because of Iowa State’s excruciating losses – Iowa, at Baylor, at OU, by a total of five points.

6. Baylor vs. Georgia, Sugar Bowl: The Bulldogs showed us last season they were in no mood to be in New Orleans as a consolation prize. And Texas pulled the upset.

This Baylor team is much better than that Texas team. These Bears are 11-2, with two incredibly tight defeats to OU. Baylor is limited offensively, but so is Georgia. The Bears could win a low-scoring game even if this was an October game. With Georgia’s motivation in question, advantage Baylor.
