OU football: 5 things to know about LSU

No. 1-ranked LSU will take on No. 4 Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff semifinal Peach Bowl.

Here are five things to know about the Tigers:

1. Led by Joe Burrow

Quarterback Joe Burrow has been phenomenal this season, and his performance has made him the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. Burrow has thrown for 4,715 yards and 48 touchdowns so far this season and holds the SEC single-season record for passing yards.

Burrow transferred to LSU from Ohio State and has a 22-3 record as a Tiger. He is a finalist for the Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award alongside Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts

2. Total offense/defense for Tigers

LSU currently has the top offense in the country, with only a slight edge over Oklahoma. The Tigers have averaged 554.4 yards of total offense per game so far this season, just 0.2 more than OU. LSU has scored eight more offensive touchdowns than the Sooners, but the Tigers have also run 41 more plays than Oklahoma. The Sooners still lead in yards per play, averaging 8.15 yards, compared to 7.79 yards per play by LSU.

In total defense, the Tigers are behind the Sooners. LSU ranks No. 32 in total defense, while Oklahoma ranks No. 24. The Tigers have given up 341.3 yards per game, and the Sooners have given up 330.6. But LSU does lead Oklahoma in average yards per play, giving up 5.04 yards per play compared to the average 5.29 yards given up by the Sooners.

3. Coaching matchup

The Tigers are coached by Ed Orgeron, who is in his fourth season at LSU. He was hired as the defensive coordinator in 2015 and named interim head coach in the middle of the 2016 season before officially being named the head coach that year. LSU has a 38-9 record under Orgeron.

Orgeron will be going up against Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley. Riley has led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff in all three seasons as head coach, but has yet to win a semifinal game. Oklahoma has a 35-5 record under Riley.

4. First appearance

This is LSU’s first appearance in the College Football Playoff. The Tigers went undefeated this season, beating Texas, Florida, Auburn and Georgia when all four teams were ranked in the top 10 in the country.

LSU is the third SEC team to reach the playoffs, joining Alabama and Georgia as the only other two teams from the conference to make it.

The Tigers are ranked No. 1, and the top-ranked team has never won the national championship in the CFP era.

5. Series record vs. Oklahoma

The Sooners and the Tigers have only met twice before. Both meetings have come in the Sugar Bowl, and each team has one win over the other. Oklahoma won 35-0 in 1949, and LSU won 21-14 in 2003 in a game that also counted as the BCS title game that year.

This will be Oklahoma’s first time in the Peach Bowl, and first time playing in the state of Georgia. The Tigers are no stranger to Georgia or Atlanta. LSU won the SEC Championship in Atlanta on Saturday and have a 5-1 record in the Peach Bowl. The Tigers last played in the Peach Bowl in 2012, falling to Clemson for their only loss in that bowl game.
