OU football: Lincoln Riley trusts his defense and wins fifth straight Big 12 title

ARLINGTON, Texas — Lincoln Riley thought about it. He debated in his mind. In those nano-seconds available for a coach’s make-or-break decision. Riley considered keeping his offense on the field.

After all, that’s what you do at Oklahoma. Trust your Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback, be it Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray or Jalen Hurts. No need to trouble the defense. Let the defense stand on the sideline and enjoy the show.

The Sooners faced fourth down from the Baylor 47-yard line with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter Saturday, the Big 12 Championship Game tied. Three measly yards would have allowed OU to keep the ball and win with a field goal from can’t-miss Gabe Brkic.

“It was close,” Riley said. “went back and forth in my mind a few times.”

Then Riley made his decision. A quite un-Oklahoma-like decision. The proper decision. Punt. Go to overtime, rely on defense and a running game to win a fifth straight Big 12 title.

Sacrilege. Heresy. Kooky.

But these are different days. This is a different Oklahoma team. These Sooners play some defense and run the ball, and if the home run plays don’t appear and the quarterback plays like an Earthling, victory remains possible.

OU beat Baylor 30-23 in overtime, because Riley trusted his eyes. He had seen his defense flog the Baylor offense. He had seen his offense grind out yardage. No reason to live in the past. This is the present.

An offense accustomed to feats of wonder dutifully trotted off the field so Reeves Mundschau could punt — which he did, down to the Baylor 1-yard line, keeping the Bears from even trying last-minute heroics.

“We wanted to win the game, so whatever Coach Riley was going to do, we’re going to trust that and hope we win,” said Sooner receiver Nick Basquine.

Overtime went just like Riley envisioned. A short pass to CeeDee Lamb that drew a facemask penalty — the guy is hard to bring down, otherwise – and two battering runs, the latter a five-yard touchdown run by Rhamondre Stevenson.

Then four straight Baylor plays in which freshman quarterback Jacob Zeno was chased like he had swiped the school mascot, and yet another College Football Playoff was within OU’s grasp.

Riley had trusted his team, particularly the defense. Riley’s team, particularly the defense, had responded.

“Obviously that trust is earned,” said nose guard Neville Gallimore. “We appreciate those moments … we love the fact that as a team, offensively, whoever, special teams can count on the next guy.”

This game should not have been this close. Two Hurts turnovers gave Baylor life and even a 13-10 halftime lead. But Riley found some rhythm for his offense in the second half, when the Sooners started field goal, touchdown, field goal. Then two cross-country pass plays in the final 10 minutes from scout-team quarterback Jacob Zeno gave the Bears hope and even a 23-23 tie.

Give Baylor credit. The seventh-ranked Bears were worthy of the stage and a possible playoff berth. Their defense is legit.

But turns out, so is OU’s. From the despair of 14 months ago, this is a unit that rushes the passer with gusto, consistently covers receivers and makes plays when necessary.

So even though Zeno was trying to write a Cinderella story — the guy played safety in practice Friday — the Sooners slew the fairy tale in overtime.

“Time to end the game, that’s all anybody was saying,” said linebacker Nik Bonitto. “Just seeing how much confidence they have in us this year, it’s really amazing.”

And so the Sooners await their playoff fate Sunday, likely headed to the Peach Bowl to play Ohio State or LSU. In playoffs the past two years, Riley has expressed confidence in his defense.

But no one really believed him. Saturday, Riley did more than say he had confidence in his defense. Against Baylor, Riley showed it, and the Sooners are Big 12 champs again.
