OSU football: Cowboys couldn't make enough plays in critical moments of Bedlam loss

STILLWATER — Twice within a few minutes, the quarterback took the snap, spun back and rolled out to his right, looking for his tight end.

First, Oklahoma State’s Dru Brown fired a pass into a crowd of Oklahoma defenders, hoping it would weave its way through to Logan Carter to convert a critical fourth down. But it didn’t.

Moments later, when OU’s Jalen Hurts turned to throw, Brayden Willis was running free at the goal line for an easy touchdown catch.

Each was a game-altering moment, and each left the Cowboys walking to the sidelines with helmets hanging.

And that’s how too many plays went in No. 7 Oklahoma’s 34-16 win over the No. 21 Cowboys Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.

OU’s defense, with its well-documented struggle to create turnovers, had two takeaways and could’ve had a couple more. In recent weeks, OSU had breathed life into its defense with takeaways, but couldn’t find one Saturday.

The OSU offense moved somewhat effectively through 2 1/2 quarters, but sputtered inside the OU 30, leaving Matt Ammendola to kick three field goals. Though the Cowboy defense came up with a couple of third-down stops in the red zone, it wasn’t enough to stem the Sooners’ momentum.

“We put ourselves in a jam where we could never get over the hump,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “We lost the turnover battle.

“In the end, it’s simple. You can’t kick field goals and beat a good team like that.”

OSU’s Chuba Hubbard ran for 104 yards, breaking the 100 mark for the 10th straight game, and moving to No. 2 on OSU’s all-time single-season list with 1,936 yards. But he couldn’t find enough room to break a big one, like he's done so many times this season.

The Cowboys held Hurts to 224 total yards — 163 passing and 61 rushing — but OU’s Kennedy Brooks went for 160 yards on 22 carries.

“He was running through big holes,” Gundy said. “It looked like to me that there’s times he’s running untouched for 6, 7, 8 yards.”

The game came to an odd ending, when OSU safety Kolby Harvell-Peel was injured with 48 seconds left. By rule, the injury required a 10-second runoff with a running clock. With 38 seconds left, and 40 seconds on the play clock, OSU would’ve had to call timeout to stop the clock.

A frustrating loss closes the Cowboys’ regular season at 8-4, leaving them waiting and watching to see what will happen in the postseason. OSU could be in the mix for the Alamo, Camping World or Texas bowls.

After hitting a midseason road block that had the Cowboys at 4-3 and appearing to be trending southward, they regrouped to win four straight before Saturday.

“These guys have done a great job,” Gundy said. “We’re a young football team. They’ve rallied. They had their backs against the wall, they fought back, found ways to win games.

“I like my guys. It’s a disappointing loss because I just didn’t feel like we… performed as well as we could have, coaches and players.

“We should’ve played better and we should’ve coached better. But I am proud of ‘em.”
