High school football: Wagoner set to take on Poteau in Class 4A state semifinals

A unique challenge awaits Wagoner in the Class 4A state semifinals.

The Bulldogs will face Poteau and its Wing-T offense Friday night at Jenks High School.

Wagoner (10-2) is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 21-14 triumph over then-undefeated Bethany on Friday. Wagoner, which has won at least 10 games in 10 straight seasons, didn’t enjoy the accomplishment for long because the Bulldogs know Poteau (11-1) is a quality team.

“We enjoyed it for a little while Saturday, but then we had to get right back and focus in on another top opponent and a much different opponent,” Wagoner coach Dale Condict said. “Just as quality as Bethany, but go about things much different.”

Wagoner is averaging 42.5 points per game. Running back Braden Drake has been consistent throughout the season. He sealed the victory against Bethany with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Drake and the Bulldogs will face a stout Poteau defense, which has not allowed more than 20 points this season.
