OU football: Alex Grinch named semifinalist for Broyles Award

NORMAN — Alex Grinch is a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Tuesday.

The award is given annually to the nation's top assistant coach, and Grinch is one of 15 finalists for the award.

Oklahoma's defense has improved greatly since Grinch took over, jumping from 114th in total defense last season to 31st in the nation this year. The Sooners have also improved in passing defense and points and yards allowed per game.

Other semifinalists include Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Snow, LSU passing coordinator Joe Brady, Minnesota offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca and Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

A list of five finalists will be announced on Dec. 2, and the winner will be announced on Dec. 10.
