High school football: Luther embracing challenge of facing defending champ Sperry

Luther's matchup Friday is one of many great ones across Class 2A.

The Lions will travel to face No. 2 Sperry (11-0) in the second round of the playoffs. Other great matchups abound, but Luther (10-1) is the latest squad to get a shot at taking down the defending state champion.

Coach Shawn Meek said Sperry hasn't changed much in its philosophies from Week 1 to now. That's a large reason for their success and why the Pirates are again favorites to win the title.

For Luther, Meek said his team will have to control the ball and limit Sperry's ability to make big plays to come away with a victory.

"Sperry has a lot of athleticism," Meek said. "They've got some kids that can really go. We've got to limit the negative plays and put ourselves in manageable situations."
