OSU football: Jarret Doege era begins at West Virginia

West Virginia’s Austin Kendall era might be over. Another transfer, Jarret Doege, made his first start last Saturday and led the Mountaineers to a 24-20 upset at Kansas State. Doege figures to start Saturday against Oklahoma State.

Kendall transferred from OU in January and struggled in this rebuilding WVU season. Kendall completed 61.5 percent of his passes this season, for 1,989 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

But Doege, the brother of former Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege, played down the stretch of West Virginia’s 38-17 loss to Tech on November 9. And Saturday in Manhattan, Doege completed 20 of 30 passes for 234 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

“I thought Jarret, in his first start, handled himself well,” said WVU coach Neal Brown. “He didn’t do anything that got us beat. I know that sounds kind of underwhelming, but he got rid of the ball a couple of times under pressure when he needed to.

“Kansas State was one of best third-down (defenses) in the country coming into the game. Our percentage was still just OK, but we had three touchdowns on third downs, which I think speaks really well of the quarterback and how he handled the pressure and stood in there and made some big plays.”

Doege transferred from Bowling Green, where in two seasons he threw 39 touchdowns and just 15 interceptions. Doege transferred to WVU and in August received a waiver from having to sit out a season, but Brown decided to use a redshirt season on Doege. That means he could play a maximum of four games and still be a junior in 2020.
