OSU football: Kolby Harvell-Peel's study time is paying off big for Cowboys

STILLWATER — When Oklahoma State safety Kolby Harvell-Peel isn’t on the field during practice, you can often find him somewhere close to Jim Knowles’ ear.

Harvell-Peel, an emerging star on the Cowboy defense, always has questions.

Schemes. Strategy. Theory.

Harvell-Peel wants to know it all, so he talks it through with Knowles, OSU’s second-year defensive coordinator.

“Kolby studies the game,” Knowles said. “When I got here, I didn’t know him. I wasn’t part of his recruitment. But you could tell right away how he studies the game.

“He has a great understanding of the whole defense.”

Harvell-Peel has been a key piece of the Cowboy defense since earning a starting job as a true freshman last fall, and will continue to be when No. 23-ranked OSU visits West Virginia at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In the last three games, Harvell-Peel has 17 tackles, four interceptions, eight pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

For the season, he's third on the team with 60 tackles, tied for third nationally with 16 passes defended, and tied for fourth nationally with five interceptions.

Though Knowles didn’t recruit him, he quickly identified Harvell-Peel as someone who could eventually become a leader and a force on the back end of his defense.

So he took some hard coaching from Knowles early on.

“You mean getting yelled at?” Harvell-Peel asked with the witty glance that has become so familiar. “He was he was hard on me when I first got here. If that’s the reason why, then I really appreciate him for doing that.

“But I’m a guy that, throughout my career, I’ve never minded really being coached. Despite his coaching style being a little different from others that I’ve had, I was always able to understand what he was doing.”

They communicate on the same wavelength, and that’s why Harvell-Peel wants to learn all the intricacies of Knowles’ methods.

“He’s a great football mind,” Harvell-Peel said. “I try to pick his brain all the time and just get knowledge from him. Ultimately, I think it’s made me a better player.”

Harvell-Peel had a school-record six pass breakups at Iowa State on Oct. 26, then had to move to a different safety position the next week because of an injury to Tre Sterling.

In that role, he came up with two interceptions and a fumble recovery. In the 31-13 win over Kansas on Saturday, he returned to his regular spot and picked off two more passes.

His natural playmaking ability continues to show through.

“Wayne Gretzky used to say, ‘I don’t go where the puck is, I go where the puck’s gonna be,’” Knowles said. “That’s really how Kolby plays. He can see the play developing, and he puts himself in position to where it’s going to end up. That’s a real knack.”
