Five takeaways from OSU’s win over Kansas

STILLWATER — On what was mostly a ho-hum Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium, No. 22 Oklahoma State overpowered Kansas 31-13 thanks to efficient offense and stout defense.

Here’s a look at five takeaways from the Cowboy victory:

1. Just Dru it

OSU starting quarterback Spencer Sanders suffered a thumb injury in the second quarter, and it became worse after he hit it on a defender’s helmet in the third.

The redshirt freshman left the game at that time, giving way to fifth-year senior Dru Brown.

After feeding star running back Chuba Hubbard for a few plays, Brown got a chance to go deep when Dillon Stoner got open down the sideline.

The perfectly placed throw landed in Stoner’s hands as he crossed the goal line for a 43-yard touchdown — the Cowboys’ final points of the day.

In his most significant action since transferring from Hawaii after the 2017 season, Brown finished 3-of-5 passing for 70 yards, spending the fourth quarter trying to run out the clock.

But with the significance of Sanders’ hand injury unknown, Brown could be in line for his first start when OSU travels to West Virginia next week.

2. Control from the start

Kansas finally scored midway through the fourth quarter, spoiling the Cowboys’ shutout attempt, but that didn’t spoil an impressive defensive performance.

OSU had three takeaways and Kansas didn’t surpass the 200-yard mark until the fourth quarter.

Kansas running back Pooka Williams had 26 yards on 12 carries, and the Jayhawks failed to rush for 50 yards as a team.

3. Hubbard rolls on

Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard didn’t plow through the porous Kansas defense like some might have anticipated, but he still had 100 yards by halftime — his eighth straight game over the century mark.

Hubbard finished with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, moving to fifth on OSU’s single-season rushing chart.

Hubbard now has 1,726 yards, having passed the season performances of Gerald Hudson in 1990, Thurman Thomas in 1985 and Terry Miller in 1977.

Next ahead of Hubbard is Thomas’ 1987 season of 1,767 yards.

4. Picking spots

Oklahoma State safety Kolby Harvell-Peel continues to find his way to the football.

The sophomore came up with two interceptions for the second straight game, picking up both of Saturday’s takeaways on tipped passes.

Harvell-Peel has six takeaways this season.

True freshman Trace Ford had an interception in the first quarter when Kansas attempted to run a trick play with backup quarterback Thomas MacVittie.

5. Up-and-down day for kickers

On a day when the wind was blowing across the field at an odd angle, from southeast to northwest, kickers and punters had their share of difficulties.

OSU placekicker Matt Ammendola missed three field goals, all of which were wide left on the same end of the field. Kickoff specialist Jake McClure kicked one out of bounds. And punter Tom Hutton had punts of 25 and 33 yards on his first two attempts.
