Class 5A cross country: Santa Fe South’s Christian Arenivar wins second consecutive state title

While Christian Arenivar runs for his school, his family and his unborn daughter, he is really running for his life

EDMOND – Santa Fe South’s Christian Arenivar and Guymon’s Dereje Himbago ran side by side in front of everyone else throughout most of the Class 5A cross country state race on Saturday.

No one expected anything different.

They are the best runners in Class 5A, and they’re always in the lead.

But with about 800 meters left in the 5-kilometer race at Edmond Santa Fe, Arenivar began what he does best.

He went into another gear.

The senior pulled away from Himbago and won his second straight state crown with a time of 15 minutes, 45 seconds. Himbago, a junior, completed the race in 16:09 to finish second.

Arenivar executed an effective strategy. His plan was to stay with Himbago for the majority of the race, before turning on the jets and finishing strong.

“I got away from him close to the woods,” Arenivar said. “Eight-hundred meters, I started pushing it. Four-hundred I just took off, and I didn’t see him behind me.”
