High school football: Western Heights duo combine for nearly 400 rushing yards in win against Southeast

Tevun Thammavongsa and Phillip Washington couldn't be contained.

The duo combined for nearly 400 rushing yards in Class 5A Western Heights' 39-16 win against Southeast on Thursday at Speegle Stadium. Thammavongsa, the starting quarterback, rushed 25 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Justin Mayhew said he fought full-body cramps during halftime, but Washington filled in great.

Washington himself added 173 rushing yards, mostly coming in the second half when he filled in for Thammavongsa. He helped the Jets increase their lead and win their first district game.

"We play in toughest districts in 5A, let alone in the state," Mayhew said. "It's rewarding for the players. It has been really nice to see my kids stick together this season through the tough schedule."

Western Heights (4-5, 1-5 District 5A-1) closes its season next Friday when it hosts Ardmore.
