OSU basketball: Marcus Watson could face Title IX investigation

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State freshman Marcus Watson could face an investigation from the university’s Title IX office after a female OSU student filed a protective order last week as an alleged victim of rape.

The female student filed the protective order after an alleged incident at Watson’s on-campus apartment Oct. 19. He was suspended from all team activities.

Watson has not been charged or arrested. He and the female student have a court appearance at Payne County courthouse set for Nov. 7.

OSU coach Mike Boynton said he did not know whether a Title IX investigation has begun, but he believes it will happen.

“I don’t want to speak out of turn,” Boynton said. “I’m obviously not involved in that process. Obviously, it’s first the legal side and I don’t know if those things happen concurrently or if one happens after another. I’m sure that will be something that comes up.”

Watson was a four-star prospect from Georgia and the top recruit in the Cowboys’ freshman class. He’s also Boynton’s second cousin.

Watson is the sixth player either suspended or dismissed during Boynton’s three-year tenure as head coach.

“I’m always worried about the program, but with the suspension themselves you have to deal with things as they come,” Boynton said. “I don’t keep count.

“I’m not trying to say, ‘Well, if this happens again, we did this the last time so let’s try to sweep it under the rug or keep it quiet.’ Nope. I’m going to come up here and I’m going to look you guys in the face and be honest and tell you what I know. We’re going to deal with it as we have the right information.”
