High school football: Bethel rallies late in win against Pauls Valley
Experience is everything for Bethel's football team.
After the Wildcats' latest win, 25-21, against Pauls Valley on Friday, they have won four games for the first time since 2011. Many of their starters have played nearly every snap since coach Joey Ginn took over in 2017, including senior quarterback Gunner Smith. Smith completed a 15-yard touchdown to Jesse Tucker with 38 seconds left to clinch the victory.
"This senior group has really bought in to what we've asked them to do," Ginn said. "Our first year, it was the coaches being the ones who led. This senior group, they've taken on that leadership role which you have to have."
Ginn said at halftime Friday, with Bethel trailing 21-14, he noticed that senior group huddle the team up before going back on the field. He complimented Smith and others for how they've embraced everything the coaching staff preaches each week.
Bethel (4-2, 1-2 District 3A-2) has won four games for the first time since 2011. If the Wildcats were to achieve five wins, it would be their first time to do so since 2008.
They travel to Conger Field to face Purcell (2-4, 1-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
