OU football: Kenneth Murray is face of Sooners' rebranded defense

DALLAS — Kenneth Murray pounded his chest three times and flexed for Fox’s cameras. He had just sacked Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger, and Murray knew exactly where to look.

A national audience was introduced to a rebranded Oklahoma defense Saturday afternoon in the Cotton Bowl — a defense that held Texas to three first-half points.

Murray, even behind a visor that shielded his eyes, is clearly the face of it.

"He's totally different from last year,” junior cornerback Tre Brown said. “He's faster. He's smarter. He just goes and plays and he doesn't think. What he wants is what he wants and he's going to get it."

The junior linebacker nearly decapitated Texas receiver Devin Duvernay in the first quarter. He blitzed and bothered Ehlinger all afternoon, eventually bringing the Longhorn quarterback down for a sack in the third quarter. It was one of nine Oklahoma sacks, tying a school record.

Ehlinger vs. Murray was Preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year vs. Preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Advantage defense.

“He showed up a bunch,” Texas coach Tom Herman said. “He’s a great player.”

Herman’s Longhorns piled up 501 yards against the Sooners last October. They had 437 yards against OU two months later in the Big 12 Championship game.

But Texas was held to 310 yards Saturday — 227 of which came in the second half. The Longhorns punted on seven of their first nine drives, and Murray was as responsible as anybody.

The middle linebacker had five tackles, all solo, and two tackles for a loss. He leads the Sooners this season with 42 tackles and six tackles for a loss.

“It was crazy watching him,” sophomore safety Pat Fields said. “I'll be in coverage and I'll hear the crowd screaming. I'll look up and see K9 doing his little celebration.”

All of those celebrations could end in Murray backing up his preseason distinction and being named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

His eyes, though, are on the Butkus Award — given to the best linebacker in college football.

“You come to Oklahoma not just to be All-Conference, but to be All-American,” defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said. “So if you’re the best defensive player at Oklahoma, you should be in the conversation for national awards. If you can do it on offense, don’t tell me you can’t do it on defense.”

Herman said OU’s new defensive scheme under Grinch has put Murray in better position this season. But then he added that Grinch’s scheme “isn’t terribly complex.”

The key might be the lack of complexity. Murray’s mind has been cleared.

“You see a guy that doesn’t have to be blitzed to get him active, to be in the backfield,” Grinch said. “You saw a guy playing fast, you saw a guy that obviously made a big impact on the result today.”

Even when plays broke down, Murray thrived in chaos.

“I’m looking for 9,” Grinch said. ‘Go save the day, bud.’ And a lot of times he did.”
