Class A fall baseball: Dale pitcher Jaxon Wright leads Pirates past Calera

YUKON – It took some time for Jaxon Wright to get comfortable.

But once he did, the Dale starting pitcher was on top of his game.

Wright struck out eight batters and didn’t allow a hit as third-ranked Dale defeated No. 9 Calera 6-1 in the first round of the Class A state tournament on Thursday at Yukon High School.

Wright was pulled in the seventh inning because of a high pitch count.

He struggled in the first inning, issuing two walks and hitting a batter. He bounced back and recorded two straight strikeouts to get out of the inning.

Calera (20-11) scored its lone run of the game on a passed ball in the second frame.

Dale coach Eddie Jeffcoat was proud of how Wright rebounded.

“He struggled early,” Jeffcoat said. “Everybody here saw that. But then, he really settled down and did what he can do when he throws strikes.”

Ike Shirey led Dale (30-3) at the plate with three hits. The junior second baseman drove in two runs. Tanner Collins, Jono Johnson and Dallen Forsythe each had two hits for the Pirates.
