Baylor, Iowa State built similarly by the Matts
The Big 12’s Saturday special is a showdown of beleaguered programs that have been elevated by coaches named Matt.
Baylor’s Matt Rhule got the Bears to a bowl game last season after going 1-11 in his first season taking over from the Art Briles rubble. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell has coached Iowa State to two straight 8-5 seasons, after the Cyclones had eight winning seasons the previous 40 years.
Now 3-0 Baylor hosts 2-1 Iowa State on Saturday.
Campbell said Rhule’s track record, including a good run as head coach at Temple, reminds Campbell of the Iowa State turnaround.
“The attitude and investment is very similar in both programs,” Campbell said. “You can see it the way they play. What jumps off the videotape is how hard those kids play. Lot of similarities to how they’re built.”
ESPN will televise ISU-Baylor, and Rhule said, “All the Big 12 games are going to be relevant. Nice to have this one relevant. First time since we’ve been here, have a home, nationally televised game.”
