College football scheduling: Lots of great matchups go unplayed

I wrote about college football scheduling last week, and a reader pointed out that one of the problems with the dumbing down of schedules is that universities limit the diversity of opponents. In other words, there are all kinds of interesting matchups that never get played.

And it got me to wondering. What Power 5 Conference matchups haven’t been played?

I went to OU and found just six Power 5 schools that never have played the Sooners: Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Purdue, Rutgers and South Carolina. That’s remarkable. Sixty-five Power 5 schools, and OU has played 58 of the possible 64. And it’s not like OU is missing a bunch of blueblood. Michigan State would be a good series. The rest, eh.

OSU is not nearly as prolific. The Cowboys have yet to play 22 Power 5 schools: Auburn, Boston College, California, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers, Southern Cal, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Wake Forest and Wisconsin. Lots of big names on that list – Auburn, Michigan State, Notre Dame,  Penn State, USC, Wisconsin.

OU’s six is extremely low. Only Nebraska, Texas and Ohio State have fewer, each with five. Miami, Missouri and Tennessee also have missed out only six fellow Power 5 schools.

OSU’s 22 is extremely high. Only Ole Miss (27), Washington State (24) and Iowa State (23) are missing more Power 5 schools on their historic schedules. Utah also is at 22.

Amid all the September (and November) games matching tradition-rich schools with either mid-majors or Division I-AA opponents, all kinds of great matchups go unplayed. Alabama has not played Oregon, Iowa or Arizona State. Clemson has not played Michigan, Oregon, Texas, UCLA, Washington, Arkansas, Wisconsin or Arizona State. Auburn has not played Notre Dame, Stanford or UCLA. Florida has not played Stanford, Washington or Wisconsin. Florida State has not played Stanford, Iowa or Washington.

Georgia has not played Iowa or Washington. LSU has not played Michigan or UCLA. Michigan State has not played OU, OSU, Clemson, Tennessee or Texas. Oregon has not played Texas A&M. Penn has not even played Virginia Tech, and they were Eastern independents together for decades. Tennessee has not played Washington. Texas A&M has not played Syracuse, Washington or Oregon.

You get the picture. All these great games are shoved aside for games against Louisiana-Monroe and Kent State and Sam Houston State.
