Texas football: Offensive hesitancy cost Longhorns

Texas lost to LSU 45-38 Saturday night in a game in which the Longhorns twice in the first quarter were stopped on fourth-and-goal from inside the Tigers’ 3-yard line. So when Texas coach Tom Herman was asked if it was the kind of game that taught or stung the ‘Horns, he had a ready answer.

“Both is accurate,” Herman said. “We’ve invested so much. They pride themselves in how hard they work and prepare to win. So when you don’t play as well and you come up short, it’s going to hurt really really really badly. But we also talked yesterday, you’re only a failure if you choose not to learn from and improve your mistakes.

“The offense learned, you might start one of your first couple of drives of the game on the 4-yard line, and you better be ready to punch it in for a score. We came out a little hesitant offensively.”

On the first fourth down, wide-open tailback Keaontay Ingram dropped a pass from Sam Ehlinger. On the second, Ehlinger was thrown for a 2-yard loss.

“It stings,” Herman said. “But they’re all ready to move on. There was a lot of positives that can be taken from the competitiveness of the game and some of the big things that we did.”
