College football rankings: Auburn is No. 1

Time for our weekly college football rankings, and long-time readers will know, I don’t rank on reputation or tradition. I rank on what you’ve done. Who have you beat, where did you play? Beating Nicholls State does NOT make you better than a team that lost to Boston College. Winning at home is nice; winning on the road is nicer.

And yes, early in the season, I do have to think in terms of the past and tradition. I give more credit for a win at Florida State than I do a win at Oregon State. As the season goes on, that will change, if necessary. But in September, you have to make some assumptions.

Basing my rankings on what teams have done – not how I think they will do – is how the College Football Playoff committee should conduct its business. I don’t know if it does, not since taking 11-1 Alabama over 11-2 Southern Cal in 2017. But it should.

These rankings will fluctuate mightily from week to week. Opening week was such a dearth of quality games, anyone with a decent win is top-10 material. That will change soon.

So here you go:

1. Auburn 1-0: Great victory over Oregon in Arlington. A discouraging defeat for not just the Ducks but the entire Pac-12. But a victory that will pay off all season long for War Eagle.

2. Florida 1-0: Beating Miami on a neutral field, especially considering the Hurricanes controlled much of the game, was another signature SEC victory.

3. Boise State 1-0: Winning at Florida State was cool. Here’s Boise State’s problem. The Broncos don’t have many marquee games left, and that Florida State game could prove to be less and less notable, depending on how the Seminoles respond.

4. North Carolina 1-0: The Tar Heels beat South Carolina in neutral Charlotte. South Carolina is no juggernaut, but beating the Gamecocks on a neutral field was one of the best victories of the weekend.

5. Wisconsin 1-0: The Badgers rolled at South Florida, a solid mid-major. Now, if the Bulls prove to be a fraud, then Wisconsin’s status declines.

6. Stanford 1-0: Excellent home win over Northwestern. Two teams that generally know how to play.

7. Oklahoma 1-0: Home win over Houston should prove to be impressive, but that all depends on Houston.

8. Georgia State 1-0: Yes, when a Georgia State wins in Knoxville, we tend to believe that says more about Tennessee than it does Georgia State. And Maybe it does. But until proven otherwise, you have to give Georgia State credit. If Oklahoma State had gone to Knoxville and won a season opener, I would have had the Cowboys in the top 10. Why not give Georgia State the same consideration?

9. Virginia 1-0: Winning at Pittsburgh is no great shakes, but conference road wins are impressive.

10. Utah 1-0: Winning in Provo isn’t what it used to be, but a road win in the Holy War counts for something.
