IN SAN FRANCISCO
Musical occasion: A group of Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra supporters were in San Francisco recently to hear the San Francisco Symphony, led by conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.
The highlights: Prior to the concert, the group took a backstage tour of the symphony hall and had a gourmet dinner in the members’ dining room.
On the trip: In the group was OKC Philharmonic’s new music director Maestro Alexander Mickelthwate.
CALM WATERS INAUGURAL BREAKFAST
Event: The new fundraiser “Ripples of Hope” breakfast was held at the Will Rogers Theatre and featured Elizabeth Clinton, daughter of a man wrongly convicted of murder in Ada. Her family’s story was featured in Netflix and the John Grisham documentary and book, “The Innocent Man.” Calm Waters Center for Children and Families announced that $40,114 was raised at the event. Shannon Presti was the emcee.
HONORING STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS
Banquet: The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence held the 33rd Academic Awards Banquet in Tulsa. They honored 100 outstanding Oklahoma public school students and five educators. The event was at the Renaissance Tulsa Convention Center.
The event: “Shoot for the Stars” was the theme and former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin gave the keynote address. Musical entertainment was by Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Orchestra. Ken Busby was banquet chairman.
The purpose: The Oklahoma Medal for Excellence in Elementary Teaching went to Catherine Adams, Piedmont Elementary; Secondary Teaching, Michelle Churchwell, Eisenhower High School, Lawton; Elementary/Secondary Administration, Dr. Rick Cobb, Mid-Del Public Schools; Regional University/Community College Teaching, Dr. Wayne Lord, University of Central Oklahoma; and Research University Teaching, Dr. Keith Streyett, University of Oklahoma. They received a $5,000 cash award and a glass sculpture. Merit-based Academic All-State Scholarships of $1,000 and medallions were presented to 1,000 Academic All State Scholars. The All State class comes from 83 schools in 75 Oklahoma school districts.
COLONIAL DAMES
Luncheon: The annual meeting of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Oklahoma met recently at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.
At the event: Attendees were members from Tulsa, Bartlesville and Oklahoma City, and included new member Todis McDonald, Oklahoma President Peg Malloy, Kathy Walker, Susan McPherson, Jane White, Patty Tague, Marilyn Case, Sody Clements, Ann Marshall, Candy Ainsworth, Laura Ratliff, Peggy Duncan, Marilyn Meade and Adelaide Liedtke.
