Westmoore’s Jenna Noel advanced Saturday into the semifinals in Class 6A’s No. 1 singles, ensuring she will finish in the top five at the state tennis tournament for the fourth straight year.
Noel defeated Christina Do of Mustang, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and then Claire Meursing of Edmond Santa Fe in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-3.
Also advancing to Tuesday’s Class 6A semifinals was the two-time defending No. 1 singles state champion, Andie Williams of Jenks. Noel and Williams are on opposite sides of the bracket and would meet in the finals if both win their semifinal matches.
Championship finals for all classes scheduled Tuesday
Because most of Friday’s scheduled matches at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center were rained out, no state championship finals were held Saturday in any of the classes.
Friday’s rain forced a long day of tennis on Saturday with some matches being played under the lights late into the night. The championship finals in all classes are scheduled on Tuesday as are all semifinals in Class 6A.
The girls’ championship finals are Tuesday and not Monday because a boys’ high school regional tournament is scheduled Monday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
Plus, a lot of the high school tennis coaches have duties with both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
Gov. Stitt attends state tennis tournament
In what is believed the first time in the history of the state high school tennis tournament, the governor of Oklahoma was in attendance.
Gov. Kevin Stitt was at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center on Saturday to watch his daughter, Natalie, who was playing on the No. 1 doubles team for Tulsa Regent Prep.
Regent Prep’s No. 1 doubles team lost in the quarterfinals to Christian Heritage Academy’s No. 1 doubles duo of Olivia Curtis and Elise Wall.
