Maurice Hooker knocks out Alex Saucedo in seventh round to retain WBO junior welterweight title
Alex Saucedo's quest to capture a world title will have to continue a little longer.
Maurice Hooker beat the Oklahoma City native by technical knockout in the seventh round Friday night in front of 4,102 people at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The world champion from Dallas caught Saucedo with a flurry of hooks to retain his World Boxing Organization junior welterweight title Friday night before referee Mark Nelson stepped in to call the fight midway through the round.
"He's a champion for a reason," Saucedo said. "Now, I am going to rest, enjoy my family, and come back stronger. I gave it my very best in the ring."
Hooker was leading the scores at stoppage time 58-55, 57-58 and 57-56.
Saucedo (28-1) was trying to become the second world boxing champion to hail from Oklahoma, following in the footsteps of Oklahoma City's Sean O'Grady, who won the World Boxing Association's lightweight title in 1981.
Hooker (25-0-3, 17 KOs) had won the vacated WBO junior welterweight title on June 9 in Manchester, England, by beating Terry Flanagan.
