Leopard prints on the prowl this season
Animal prints, especially leopard, are everywhere this season.
Leopard is a print I’ve always liked. It instantly adds energy, a bit of sophistication and fun. Three pairs of leopard shoes – a slip-on, a ballet slipper and a lace-up oxford – are in my closet right now, along with a sleeveless thigh-grazing leopard sweater vest and an oversize leopard scarf.
I did a major closet clean a year ago and they made it into the keep pile. All are a few seasons old, but I keep them around. I'm thinking about adding a leopard bootie.
Leopard is a classic print. Always in style. Some years it’s just more popular. I wrote about the trend recently in The Oklahoman.
Centuries ago, leopard as a fur was associated with royalty, warriors and goddesses. Fast forward to the 1920s and flappers were draping themselves in leopard fur coats.
The 1950s saw women wearing leopard print bikinis and lingerie. Jackie Kennedy wore an Oleg Cassini real leopard fur coat in the 1960s, and women clamored to own one. As people became more sensitive to animal conservation, faux fur came into its own.
Through the years, the spotted print has been popular with rockers, pop stars, celebrities and almost everyone else. This season, it shows up on dresses, skirts, blouses, coats, jackets, shoes and accessories.
If you don't already have something leopard in your closet, go on the prowl. It's easy to spot.
