DC Comics to launch streaming service, celebrate Batman
The annual "Batman Day" event, now in its fifth year, was first introduced to honor Batman's 75th anniversary.
Several local comic shops, Barnes & Noble stores and other locations will give away select comics while supplies last on Saturday. They include:
Batman: White Knight issue #1 reprint
This reprint of the sold-out first issue of Sean Murphy's miniseries looks at a Gotham City where the Joker is apparently cured of his homicidal tendencies and attempts to right the wrongs he's perpetrated over the years. This issue will also feature a preview of the first DC Comics "Black Label" title," Batman: Damned."
"Batman: Li'l Gotham" #1
Written by Derek Fridolfs and drawn by Dustin Nguyen, this all-ages tale features familiar Bat-characters in stories appropriate for younger readers.
DC is going beyond the stores to celebrate Batman Day this year, as the digital subscription service "DC Universe" will also launch on Saturday.
The first two seasons of the previously released "Young Justice" will be available on the service at launch, with the third season, "Young Justice: Outsiders" set for release in 2019.
The live-action "Titans" series announced its debut date as Oct. 12 on the streaming service. Episodes will be released weekly for the first season, which consists of 12 episodes.
According to DC, "Titans" follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Brenton Thwaites ("Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales") stars as Robin.
Other programming on the service will include "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" starring Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher; and a remastered "Batman: The Animated Series."
Some of the digital comics fans can read with the service will include the first appearances of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman; and other titles including "Batman: Gothic"; "Green Arrow: Year One"; "Jack Kirby's New Gods" and others. The initial cost of the service is $7.99 per month or $74.99 for 15 months.
