'Relaxed' vibe to infuse lower section of MAPS 3 downtown park
Basketball courts and a soccer field will give children play space in the lower section of the $139 million MAPS 3 downtown park.
The city council approved preliminary plans for the 28-acre lower park and authorized $2 million to complete final plans and prepare for construction.
Compared to the intensively developed upper park, the lower park will have a relaxed, rustic vibe when it is completed in 2021.
"The lower park was always envisioned as something a little bit different than the upper park," Gavin McMillan of landscape architects Hargreaves Associates told the city council as he went over the preliminary plans.
The lower park construction budget is $20.5 million, compared to the $60.6 million budgeted for construction of the upper park.
Under construction for about 14 months and a little more than halfway to completion, the upper park is expected to open next summer.
The lower park will open about two years later.
