Can toads fly?

When pigs can fly.

I won't hold my breath.

Nevertheless, here of late I am seriously starting to ponder whether toads have wings.

Please, hear me out.

I have been startled on several recent occasions by toads that emerge from pots and containers wherein I have some garden plants rooted in place. The latest incident was one in which a toad was discovered living in the topsoil of the upright half of a whiskey barrel plant container.

It belies explanation of how in the world a toad could manage to maneuver up the slippery side of a planting vessel such as that. After all, toads seem to be limited to short-distance hops. Their ambulatory method of choice seems to be both clumsy and unambitious.

Do toads have wings?

Granted, I've never witnessed such a thing.

I'm still perplexed.

Maybe what is required is a wildlife observation concealment structure on my home's front porch. I suppose that I could park myself inside such a thing and then keep meticulous notes on what transpires as Mr. Toad goes about his daily travels.

Now, where was it that I last put my hammer, nails and saw?
