NASA astronaut Dr. Stanley G. Love definitely enjoys talking about space, and that’s exactly what he’ll be doing at SoonerCon 27. Love will cover topics like why it’s hard getting to Mars, how Antarctica relates to space travel and discuss a day in the life on the International Space Station.
SoonerCon is Oklahoma’s premier pop culture, fantasy, sci-fi, gaming, cosplay and anime convention. This year’s event runs June 22 - 24 at the Reed Conference Center in Midwest City, Okla. The theme of this year’s convention is “Beyond the Veil” and features bestselling authors, filmmakers and artists, as well as representatives from the field of STEM, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.)
Science fans have the opportunity to learn about asteroid mining, space news and getting to Mars, including a general Q&A session with Love on Saturday afternoon.
Love flew aboard space shuttle mission STS-122 to the International Space Station and performed two space walks. He now works as a crew representative for the Space Launch System (SLS) researching deep space travel at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Besides special guest panels and workshops, the convention features a much-anticipated costume contest, tabletop and video game room, film screenings, art show, author readings, musical performances, dance, outdoor activities, kids crafting and education and more.
“It’s an honor and unique opportunity to feature a guest like Dr. Love at SoonerCon because he’s an incredibly effective science communicator who also enjoys the possibilities that science fiction makes us think about,” said Shai Fenwick, Future Society of Central Oklahoma President. “Oklahoma is eager to make learning fun and collaborative.”
