Former first lady Barbara Bush died Tuesday at 92, and while she considered herself to be a native of Maine, and a Texan, she visited Oklahoma many times throughout here life.

Barbara Bush has carried on a history of leadership and literacy advocacy long after her husband's presidency throughout the nation, including Oklahoma.
Through keynote speeches, roundtable discussions and volunteering during her many state visits, it's no question that the former first lady made her mark on the state.
“When one out of five Americans can't read or write, comprehend well enough to hold down a job, then we've got a problem,” Bush told reporters during a state visit in 1988.
Choctaw's Old Germany closes its doors
CHOCTAW — The Old Germany Restaurant closed its doors Sunday night, ending 42 years as one of eastern Oklahoma county's top family destinations.
The announcement was made by owner Mike Turek late Monday evening on social media. Indications are both Old Germany and Turek's Tavern will both cease operations and a new tenant is being sought for the property.
Turek's parents Heinz and Christel moved the four of their six children still living at home outside Frankfort, Germany, to Choctaw in 1974 with few job prospects but five acres of land. A glassblower by trade, Heinz leased the Root-n-Scoot from its original owner Alfred Panek for $200 a month in early 1976, but by March 1 he had changed to Old Germany.
Within 18 months, all remnants of the Root-n-Scoot were replaced by a variety of schnitzels, Bratwurst, Knackwurst, house-made Cevapcici sausage, a variety of rye breads, sauerkraut, house-made German potato salad, fried potatoes, red cabbage, potato dumplings and spaetzle.
