If you have some time to relax during the holiday, several comic book companies have created holiday tie-ins this year to celebrate the season with you.

Christmas and comics have gone together since the early days of the medium, with Santa Claus appearing on covers with Superman, Batman and Captain Marvel dating into the 1940s.

This year, superheroes, talking ponies and even Ebenezer Scrooge will get into the Christmas spirit in comics.

DC Holiday Special 2017 #1

DC's holiday issue features big names from their world, including Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Writer Denny O'Neil, who wrote classic Batman holiday tales in the 1970s, teams up with artist Steve Epting for a new Batman holiday tale in this year's issue.

Tom King, current writer of "Batman" and "Mister Miracle," teams with writer Mitch Gerads for a Hanukkah story featuring World War II soldier Sgt. Rock.

My Little Pony Holiday Special 2017

"My Little Pony" has been a solid seller for IDW, and this year the ponies of Equestria will celebrate the New Year in "My Little Pony Holiday Special 2017."

In this year's special, Twilight and Applejack are frustrated with the commercialization of "Hearthswarming," but over the course of the comic, find a way to celebrate with their loved ones.

The story was written by James Asmus with art by Brenda Hickey.

Harvey Kurtzman's 'Marley's Ghost'

"A Christmas Carol" frequently has been remixed into comics. English author Charles Dickens' novella, first published in 1843, features the transformation of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge after he is visited one Christmas Eve by the ghost of his business partner, Jacob Marley, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.

In a new digital-only release, a version of Dickens' "Christmas Carol" has been crafted by current creators working from a partial adaptation by noted cartoonist Harvey Kurtzman (1924-1993).

"Marley's Ghost" is the posthumous completion of Kurtzman's adaptation of the story. Kurtzman, the creator of MAD, Help magazine and others began work on "Marley's Ghost" in the 1950s, as an early example of what would later be called "graphic novels."

More than 60 years later, writers Josh O'Neill and Shannon Wheeler have completed the tale based on Kurtzman's extensive adaptation notes, while illustrator Gideon Kendall utilizes Kurtzman's breakdowns and stylistic choices.

“With Harvey Kurtzman's Marley's Ghost, families everywhere can enjoy this retelling of a holiday favorite, while comic aficionados will marvel at this now completed Kurtzman work,” Chip Mosher, comiXology's Head of Content & Senior Director of Communications, said in a news release. “Marley's Ghost is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between some of the greatest creative talents of any time. Once you dive in, you'll be hit by the tour-de-force storytelling of Josh O'Neill and Shannon Wheeler, along with Gideon Kendall's finishes on Kurtzman's roughs that delivers Dickens's A Christmas Carol for audiences today.”

"Harvey Kurtzman's Marley's Ghost" is available for purchase on comiXology and Kindle; members of comiXology Unlimited or Kindle Unlimited have access to read the title for free.
