OK Baptist leader Anthony Jordan announces plans to retire in 2018

The Rev.  Anthony Jordan, the longtime executive director-treasurer of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, has announced his retirement, effective April 2018.

Jordan made the announcement at a Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 12. At that time, the board elected an executive search committee to seek a replacement for Jordan.

Jordan was selected to helm the Oklahoma convention in April 1996.

His 22-year tenure as the convention's leader is the longest anyone has held the executive director-treasurer's role in the religious organization's history, the Baptist Messenger, the convention's official newspaper, said in a report.

Under his leadership, Oklahoma Southern Baptists conducted a successful capital campaign -- upwards of $55 million -- to improve Falls Creek Conference Center and expand it for use as a year-round facility. The convention recently hosted a two-day celebration of the 100th anniversary of the popular conference center near Davis.

Also, among other things, Jordan led a renewed effort among Oklahoma Baptists to partner with Oklahoma's Roman Catholic community and other religious groups to hold Rose Day, an annual sanctity-of-life event that draws hundreds of people from the state's Christian faith community to the Oklahoma State Capitol each year.

A special reception will be held to recognize Jordan during the Oklahoma Baptist convention's 2017 annual meeting in November, The Baptist Messenger, reported Tuesday. A special retirement celebration event will take place sometime in 2018, the report said.
