EDMOND — Clegern Elementary School, 601 S Jackson, will celebrate its 85th birthday with an open house and tours from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The open house will include guided and self-tours, student-led presentations, special historical artifacts and refreshments.

"We are excited to welcome our Clegern alumni back to their elementary school," Principal Teri Cowden-Draper said.

"Students will be giving short presentations about the wall murals that represent our enriched Core Knowledge curriculum."

Established in 1931 as a one-room school house, Clegern now has an enrollment of 298 that includes two classes in every grade level.

The school is named for Harry Clegern, who donated the land to build the campus on what was once a peach orchard.

Community members, former students and their parents and retired staff members are invited to the open house.

Former students are encouraged to bring photos, yearbooks or other special items to tell stories about their school days.
