"Leap of Faith" coming to UCO in Edmond
EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present “Leap of Faith” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through April 22 and 2 p.m. April 23 at Mitchell Hall Theatre.
Based on the 1992 film, “Leap of Faith” centers around a con artist, the Rev. Jonas Nightingale, whose bus breaks down during travel with his ministry.
Stuck in a small Kansas town, Nightingale invites the townspeople to a revival, but is challenged by a sheriff determined to stop him from taking people's money.
“'Leap of Faith' is a classic anti-hero play, in the tradition of ‘The Rainmaker' and ‘The Music Man,'” said Greg White, assistant dean for the College of Fine Arts and Design and professor of musical theater.
“It is a timeless, moving tribute to the power of faith and is incredibly entertaining.”
The musical, making its Oklahoma premiere, features music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Disney's “Beauty and the Beast,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and Disney's “The Little Mermaid”) and lyrics by Grammy winner Glenn Slater (Disney's “Tangled”).
White said the cast of musical theater students brings the music to life.
“This is an outstanding cast," White said. "The leads in this show are professional caliber."
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for all others and free for UCO students with a valid ID. To buy tickets, call 974-3375, or go to www.mitchellhalltheatre.com.
