It's Thursday. Here are today's headlines:
Anadarko cold case under grand jury's scrutiny
A pastor's brutal unsolved slaying on a Sunday in 2009 inside her church, a half a block from police headquarters, has been brought before a grand jury.
Reported Phil O'Connor for The Oklahoman in 2013:
Police found Rev. Carol Daniels, 61, dead in her downtown Anadarko Pentecostal church on Aug. 23, 2009.
Daniels had been stabbed multiple times, her head nearly severed, her hair lit on fire. The killing didn't appear random. The motive didn't appear to be robbery. The killer posed her body as if crucified, took her clothes and sprayed a chemical to destroy DNA evidence.
The case stalled. The Oklahoman's Nolan Clay reported that a grand jury inquiry is underway. Witnesses are giving sworn testimony that could spur movement in the cold case:
Grand jurors specifically are looking into whether a drug dealer was involved in the slaying of the Rev. Carol Daniels and, if so, whether she had accomplices.
The main suspect, Denise Kay Cooper, 55, of Anadarko, died of cancer Feb. 21. The suspect, who also was known as Darnell Cooper, spent time in prison for methamphetamine distribution and had a criminal history that included assault ...
Grand jurors hear testimony in sessions that are closed to the public and witnesses are admonished not to disclose what they said.
