Bethany library to move to temporary location

BETHANY -- The Bethany Library will move to a temporary space on Monday, Mar. 6, 2017, as construction begins on the existing site for a new library.

The new site will be in the Deville Shopping Center at 7941 NW 23, Bethany which is the corner of NW 23rd and Council Road. The existing library will close Monday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Mar. 5 to allow the library to move and setup furnishings and materials.

The new library, designed by Dewberry Architects, will include custom-designed spaces to serve the growing membership and modern library services. The facility will include a conference room, media lab, dedicated children’s areas, dedicated teen space, children’s program room and porch, a large dividable meeting room with kitchenette, study rooms, and a quiet reading room with porch. The spacious interior will introduce natural light, designed around reader comfort.

"We're really excited to find this new temporary location. The space is going to be great for our library members and visitors,” said Bethany Library manger Erin Bedford. “Of course, we’ll miss the ducks and geese, but we are excited to meet our new neighbors.”

The existing Bethany Library was completed in 1964 with minimal rearrangements and finish updates. With only 8400 square feet, the space no longer meets the needs of a modern library. The new site design is 23,000 square feet and more than doubles the number of reader seats and computer stations available.

Outside, the new library will include a drive-up book return and more parking spaces to meet day-to-day demand. The City also plans to improve the aesthetics of the nearby retention pond, make improvements to the park, and introduce a walking trail to the building site.

When considering an updated library, the City sought input from the community and an evaluation by the architectural team. The current site’s proximity to City Hall, the YMCA and the park make it a destination for many Bethany residents, so the City of Bethany and Metropolitan Library System decided to build a new library at the existing location. The library is anticipating a Fall 2018 grand opening.
