Comic Collection Monday #49: Uncanny X-Men #143

In today's Comic Collection Monday, I’ll take a look at “Uncanny X-Men” #143 with a publication date of March 1981.

In Comic Collection Monday, I post the cover of a comic book from my collection, along with a brief note about the issue – what I thought about it, where I got it, whatever comes to mind.  Spoilers are ahead if you haven’t read the issue in question.  I'm continuing a December theme of Christmas-themed comics with this issue.
The issue: The issue was written by Chris Claremont, with art by John Byrne and Terry Austin.

The title is "Demon.”

The final issue of Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s epic run on “Uncanny X-Men” comes to a close in this holiday issue, set on Christmas Eve.  It’s also during Hanukkah, and the Jewish Kitty Pryde is alone at the mansion.

As the rest of the X-Men are off celebrating Christmas, Kitty finds herself facing off against a N'Garai demon, apparently a straggler or remnant of sorts from an earlier battle.  During the battle, the Danger Room and the Blackbird are destroyed, but Kitty proves herself an X-Man to reckon with.   If the comic feels awfully familiar to the recently released at the time “Alien,” that’s less coincidence than homage.

How it got in my collection: Just as part of my X-Men collection; this was one of the Claremont-Byrne issues that wasn’t impossible to come by at the time.

Going on in the world: According to Mike’s Amazing World, this March-dated comic book would have gone on sale on Dec 16, 1980.  The top show of the TV season was “Dallas.” The top film at the box office was “Stir Crazy.” The top song on the Billboard hot 100 was “Lady” by Kenny Rogers.
