Second annual Local Comic Shop Day to be celebrated
The second annual Local Comic Shop Day is set for Saturday.
The day, created by the comics retail organization ComicsPRO, is similar in concept to Record Store Day — participating retailers will sell exclusive releases from participating publishers.
Some items offered are very limited editions, others will be "first day of release" items debuting on LCSD, released on Saturday.
The goal of Local Comic Shop Day, according to the organization, is to jump-start the holiday buying season for storefront comics specialty retailers while also giving comics fans a mix of interesting products.
After last year's Local Comic Shop Day, I was asked to be on the committee that helps ComicsPRO with planning the event. It was a fascinating glimpse behind-the-scenes of organizing a national comics event.
In its second year, the number of items and participating stores both rose.
More than 500 comic stores are participating nationwide, and each will have some mix of the 28 items available for the day.
Among the exclusive items set for the day is a hardcover edition of "Doctor Strange: The Oath," by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Marcos Martin.
According to ComicsPRO's executive director Marco Davanzo, the hardcover will contain bonus features including original series pitch, script, page layouts, pencils/inks, character sketches and promo pieces.
Another Marvel item is the first issue of “Champions,” which will have a limited-edition cover from industry legend Neal Adams released Saturday. "Champions" features young Marvel heroes in a team-up book.
Frank Miller, who participated last year with his "Dark Knight III" comic, this year is a participant with a variant cover of the Image comic "Moonshine," by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso. Other Image Comics items include an exclusive statue based on its "Lying Cat" character from "Saga" and an exclusive hardcover edition of the first 12 issues of the Robert Kirkman-written "Outcast."
DC Comics offered an exclusive statue of its Killer Frost character, and a hardcover edition of its best-selling "Rebirth" one-shot written by Geoff Johns.
New England Comics joined the day for the first time with a brand-new exclusive comic featuring The Tick.
Other participating publishers include Action Lab: Danger Zone, Archie, Black Mask, Boom!, Dark Horse, Diamond Select Toys, IDW, Oni, Titan and Valiant.
“Over the past few years, many retailers and comic fans have been telling us that they wanted a day to celebrate the local comic shop and to specifically be able to buy unique, limited items,” ComicsPRO President Peter Dolan, of Main Street Comics in Middletown, New York, said in a previous interview.
"One of the advantages of this day is that it doesn't require storefronts, publishers and Diamond to sell things at a loss. The items are being sold at regular markups all along the supply chain,” Dolan said.
