Walmart continues rapid expansion in Oklahoma City

Walmart has plans to open at least two new Supercenter stores in Oklahoma City over the next two years as it continues to expand to protect its dominance of the local grocery market.

The first of the new Supercenters, at 3301 SW 104, is set to open Oct. 5.

There also are plans for a Walmart Supercenter on the northwest corner of Rockwell and Memorial. The 186,000-square-foot store will have a full- service pharmacy with a drive-thru, garden center, money center, pickup service, Tire and Lube Express and a fuel station.

Mike Hayes, manager of the Supercenter on SW 104, and his staff have spent the last five weeks preparing for the opening. Crews were busy stocking shelves Thursday.

The store already had received about 120 truckloads of merchandise and was expecting at least 30 more deliveries to fully stock shelves in time for next month's opening.

“There's just so many little details that need to be taken care of that the customer hopefully won't necessarily see or won't know about in order for us to be ready to open,” Hayes said. Each of the new Oklahoma City Supercenters will employ more than 300 workers, Walmart said.

Walmart continues to expand its presence in Oklahoma City to meet increased demand, said Anne Hatfield, spokeswoman for Walmart.

"As with any new store, we are responding to the growing need for access to affordable fresh food and household merchandise," Hatfield said.

A new Walmart Neighborhood Market also is under construction at the corner of S May and SW 134 that is expected to open early next year.

The retailer also is doing extensive renovations and expanding its Supercenter at 7860 Northwest Expressway to meet growing demand in northwest Oklahoma City.

"We continue to grow in Oklahoma," Hatfield said.
