Trader Joe's gets ready for Nichols Hills store's debut

Nichols Hills' much-anticipated Trader Joe's store will open to the public at 8 a.m. Friday.

The store, at 6409 Avondale Drive in the Nichols Hills Plaza shopping center, features the traditional Trader Joe's cedar-covered walls and Hawaiian-decor, mixed with hand-painted murals featuring scenes from the Oklahoma City area.

Painted on the walls of the store are murals featuring images of the Myriad Botanical Gardens, the Oklahoma Capitol, buffalo, and even a University of Oklahoma football game.

Each check-out stand is named after a different Oklahoma City neighborhood, including The Plaza District, Automobile Alley and Midtown.

The 10,000-square-foot store will be the first Trader Joe's in the Oklahoma City metro area. Trader Joe's opened its first Oklahoma location in February in Tulsa.

Staff at the Oklahoma City store were busy stocking shelves this week for Friday's grand opening.

Many eager would-be shoppers already have stopped by to ask questions about the store and peek in the windows, said David Murray, store manager, or “captain” as Trade Joe's calls its managers.

“Everyone we've talked to has been very welcoming to us and we are just excited to be part of the area,” Murray said. “We hope the neighborhood will embrace us.”

Trader Joe's is a big plus for Nichols Hills Plaza, said shopping center manager David Allsbrook, who also manages the Classen Curve and Triangle at Classen Curve shopping centers for the ownership group Washington Prime Group Inc.

“This popular grocery brand will add another dimension to what we already offer, giving the community another great reason to come to Nichols Hill Plaza,” Allsbrook said.

Nichols Hills Mayor Steven Goetzinger and Trader Joe's staff will hold a ceremonial lei-cutting Friday to celebrate the store opening. The store will host live music, food demonstrations, a balloon artist and giveaways throughout the day.

Trade Joe's is most widely known for its more than 3,000 Trader Joe's private label items, which includes Trader Jose's salsas, Trader Ming's fried rice and Trader Giotto's marinara sauces.

Stores also offer basic groceries including a mix of organic and conventional groceries, milk and eggs.

The Trader Joe's chain was founded in 1958 in Southern California and has since expanded to more than 455 stores spanning 41 states.
